The Club has received the news of the sad passing of long time club stalwart Keith Watkins.
Keith first played for the Lansdown Ist XI age 15, in the late 1950’s, and was an ‘ever present’ for nearly 30 years probably making more appearances than any other player over such a long and sustained period.
He was a middle order batsman and an occasional off spinner but his most important role was as an outstanding fielder.
He was a popular Ist XI captain in 1983 /84 and a member of the League winning teams in 1980 and 1981. Before that he was in the Lansdown team of 1973 which won the Somerset Knock Out competition illustrating his longevity as a player.
But it is off the field that he will be remembered also as one of the prime movers in organizing the illustrious pro/am double wicket competitions in early 1980’s in which an array of cricketing legends played including Viv Richards, Ian Botham ,Richard Hadley and Graham Gooch.
These were halcyon days in the history of Lansdown Cricket Club when overseas tours took place on a regular basis . Keith and wife Jo were avid tourists and ‘the life and soul’ of many parties.
Keith was not only a cricketer but represented England School at rugby as an outside half at under 15 level. But is first love in the winter was football and he played for Bath City as a part time professional before turning his attention to golf and , as a member of Bath Golf Club, becoming a low handicap golfer.
Keith lived in Cedric Road with wife Jo for most of his married life and was a devoted family man with children and grandchildren. He and the family and were frequent visitor to the club throughout his life.
A club Vice President and much respected ‘Elder’ he was a loyal and committed ‘Lansdown Man’ and will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
